Stonecoat

Hand-tooled to the look of cut stone, complete with grout lines — or given the look of a more rustic field stone.

A field-applied limestone coating: a proprietary blend built on quarried, crushed limestone — made out of stone.

It can be textured, honed and finished like cut stone, or given the look of a more rustic field stone. The range is virtually limitless — from elegant and authentic, to modern and organic.

Integrally colored with powdered mineral-oxide pigments. Manufactured in the United States; installed by trained applicators.

Where it goes

Vault ribs and carved capitals in Stonecoat.
Suitable for
Interior, exterior, vertical and horizontal applications; wet locations such as shower surrounds; water features such as fountains.
Uses
A decorative coating that replicates the look of quarried stone or other stone-like finishes · coating EPS foam shapes and panels · cast elements made in EPS, rubber or other molds · poured-in-place or cast countertops
Elements
Countertops, fireplaces, door and window surrounds, custom columns, arches, quoins, flooring, wainscoting, range hoods, pool copings, fountains, and interior or exterior wall surfaces — on luxury residences, resorts and commercial projects.
Substrates
Portland cement, cement plaster (stucco), gypsum board, poured-in-place concrete, CMU blocks, brick masonry, cement backer boards, lightweight concrete, ceramic or natural stone tile, and EPS foam.
EPS foam shapes
Stonecoat is the finish covered by the EPS foam-shapes specification — extruded, poured-mold and encapsulated units, and full cast panels and shapes — with a minimum 3/8″ of Stonecoat on all finished, exposed surfaces.
Horizontal work
Stonecoat goes on horizontal surfaces and is sealed there.

Where it does not go

Do not apply Stonecoat to:

  • Unstable or unapproved substrates such as asphalt.
  • Directly over elastomeric or acrylic EIFS type finish coats.
  • Directly on wood, GFRC, PVC, ABS, urethane or other plastics.
  • Sheet metal or other metal or steel — metal lath, grounds and reglets are acceptable for direct contact.

Never apply an Arcusstone coating over any type of EIFS finish coat, including acrylic, elastomeric and urethane.

Bonding Agent

Do not use Bonding Agent for Stonecoat over concrete on grade, retaining walls, or horizontal wet-location applications where block-pattern joints are left without a backfill of material in the joints.

Every finish can be custom-colored to match virtually any color — Arcusstone matches chips from paint brands and other materials, arranged in conversation.

Because the materials are natural and the application is by hand, actual colors and textures may vary from any printed reproduction.

  1. (1) Rougher surfaces have higher values. Most dry materials in combination have friction coefficients between 0.3 and 0.6; zero would mean no friction; Teflon has a coefficient of 0.04; rubber can yield 1.0 to 2.0.
  2. (2) 10 freeze/thaw cycles, each of air drying at 120°F for 8 hours, total immersion in water at 70°F for 8 hours, then exposure to −20°F for 16 hours.
  3. (3) Specimens were partially immersed in 100°F water for 24 hours, and then observed.
  4. (4) Permeability is the rate at which water vapor passes through a material; permeance (perms) is how it is measured. The lower the number, the less vapor comes through.
  5. (5) Vertical tube furnace at 1382°F; the criteria include no flaming from the specimens after the first 30 seconds.
  6. (6) The test procedure is comparable to UL 723, ANSI/NFPA No. 255 and UBC No. 8-1.

Stonecoat's 5,800 PSI is its 28-day ASTM C-109 result of 5,805 psi, rounded.

Applying it
Climate
Temperature
Over 40°F (4.5°C) and rising, and less than 100°F (38°C).
Substrate
Do not apply to frozen or thawing substrates.
Protection
Use sun shades and wind screens during initial cure.
Rain
Do not apply if precipitation is expected within 48 hours, unless the work can be adequately protected.
Mixing
  1. 01Place 3.5 quarts (14 cups) of cool potable water in a clean 5 or 6-gallon plastic bucket.
  2. 02Add the pigment to the water, before any dry material.
  3. 03Blend in the dry material gradually with a low-speed mixing drill, adding small amounts of clean water to the desired consistency.
  4. 04Let the material set 15 minutes, then remix for 90 seconds before use.
Application
  1. 01Apply the first coat to approximately 3/16″ with moderate trowel pressure.
  2. 02Let it take up until firm enough not to leave a significant depression when pressed with fingertips.
  3. 03Apply the second coat with less trowel pressure, to a total application thickness of 3/8″.
  4. 04When the second coat has taken up like the first, the material is ready for finishing.
Method
Usually applied by trowel in a two-coat application; it can also be sprayed and back-trowelled.
Bonding Agent
The Bonding Agent is required for most Arcusstone material applications.
Clean-up
Clean tools and inadvertent applications immediately with water and a scrub brush, rinsing with clean water; once dry, mechanical means may be needed.
Sealing and maintenance
Required
A water-repellent penetrating sealer is required on exteriors in extreme climates — higher freeze/thaw cycles, higher and more constant UV exposure, higher altitudes, or higher humidity, subtropical and tropical locations.
Also required
In wet locations, water features, countertops, and all exterior horizontal applications.
Top coat
An additional commercial-grade top-coat sealer is strongly recommended for countertops, barbecue tops, bath, kitchen, garage floors, driveways, walkways, patios and other surfaces with heavier exposure to grease and staining.
Recommended
Sealing every other exterior application is strongly recommended but not required — against efflorescence in damp, rainy environments, UV fade, graffiti, caustic chemicals, and staining from acid rain, tree sap and bird or animal droppings.
Sealer coverage
200 – 250 sq ft per gallon (4.9 – 6.1 m²/L)
Before sealing
New coating cures a minimum of 48 hours. The sealer goes on in two applications, wet on wet, for maximum penetration, protection and warranty.
Color and texture
Sealing does not alter the color or texture of the coating.
Water features
The Penetrating Water Repellent is not for pool surrounds or submersed work such as fountains.
Warranty
Arcusstone warrants every product to conform to its current published specifications at the time of shipment.
The full system
Every guarantee covers the full Arcusstone system — primer, finish and sealer together.
