Bonding Agent / Primer

The product that prepares the wall — a strong chemical bond between Arcusstone coatings and substrates.

A non-toxic, non-flammable, freeze/thaw-stable liquid re-emulsifying bonding agent — a vinyl-acetate monomer resin compound in compliance with ASTM C 932.

It is required for most Arcusstone material applications, and recommended under the Lime Plasters over new non-porous surfaces or where adhesion is a concern.

You may also see it called ArcusBond.

Coverage
200 – 300 sq ft per gallon
Sizes
5-gallon pails
Film
A uniform coat of at least 5 mils, no bare spots
Standard
ASTM C 932
Modern courtyard walls in white coating with grey bands.

Where it goes

A coated fireplace wall with the room masked and sheeted for the work.
Surfaces
Exterior and interior cement plaster stucco, poured concrete, masonry, cement board, drywall, ceramic tile, natural stone and gypsum plaster.
New stucco
Not necessary over new Portland cement stucco brown coats — but recommended anyway, to even out the suction, prevent flashing from rapid moisture loss, avoid unwanted color variation and aid bonding.
Existing stucco
Over existing stucco installations it must be applied.
Acrylic basecoats
Required over cementitious acrylic basecoats such as Genesis DM.
Vertical work
Broadcast 30-mesh washed, graded sand into the wet bonder to give tooth for a more secure bond — over an EIFS basecoat, apply a generous, uniform coat by brush or roller first.
Coated shapes
It provides the chemical bond between an EPS foam core and Stonecoat in manufactured shapes.

Where it does not go

  • Do not apply to wet, hot, frozen or thawing substrates.
  • Do not apply as a water barrier, or where hydrostatic pressure is present, such as a retaining wall.
  • Do not apply to concrete or other substrates poured or placed against earth.
  • It will not prevent efflorescence formation.
  • Do not use it for Stonecoat over concrete on grade, retaining walls, or horizontal wet-location applications where block-pattern joints are left without a backfill of material in the joints.

The system

A grey coated fireplace wall mid-installation, the floor protected.
Order
Bonding Agent / Primer, then the finish, then the Penetrating Water Repellent. This is the primer, not a finish — it is not sealed itself.
The full system
Every guarantee covers the full Arcusstone system — primer, finish and sealer together.
Warranty
Arcusstone warrants every product to conform to its current published specifications at the time of shipment.

Applying it
Method
Brush or roller, to a uniform coat of at least 5 mils with no bare spots. A one-time re-emulsifying bonder.
Temperature
For best workability and performance, between 45°F (7°C) and 90°F (32°C).
Substrate
Sound, dry, and free of cracks, dirt, efflorescence or other contaminants.
Mixing
Ready to use. Stir thoroughly before each use; do not shake or use mechanical mixers.
Cure
Let it dry to the touch and cure at least one hour before the Arcusstone material goes over it.
Timing
In a dry, interior environment it can go on up to 3 days before the Arcusstone coating; in a damp, exterior environment — humidity, fog, water vapor, condensation — apply it the same day.
Clean-up
Immediately, with water and mild detergent, rinsing with clean water; once dry, a solvent such as acetone may be required.
Storage and shelf life
  • Store out of direct sunlight, between 40° and 100°F (4.5° to 38°C), on pallets under cover, no more than 2 pallets high.
  • Protect from freezing. If frozen, do not add heat — thaw slowly at room temperature and stir thoroughly before use.
  • Store opened containers with the lid securely placed, wiping the lip of the bucket before resealing.
  • Shelf life: 1 year in unopened original pails, or 6 months once opened and properly resealed.
